VSA, the international organization on arts and disability, provides educators, parents, and artists with resources and tools to support arts programming in schools and communities. VSA showcases the accomplishments of artists with disabilities and promotes increased access to the arts for all people. The nonprofit was founded more than 35 years ago by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith to create a society where people with disabilities learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.
The Creative Spirit was a quarterly newsletter developed to compliment VSA’s outreach. The format of a printed 24 page self mailer was restrictive. To showcase the true nature of the visual and performing arts an interactive version was needed.
Leveraged existing knowledge of InDesign and utilized Adobe’s Digital Publishing Suite, to fit The Creative Spirit digital edition into existing print workflow.
Adding interactivity allowed the end user to:
• View performances
• Zoom into a detail of artwork
• See exhibit spaces in panoramic views
Having a digital edition of The Creative Spirit brought more depth to the subject matter while adding interactivity made the publication fun and engaging for the end user.
